SMS Notifications — Consent & Opt-In

How users consent to receive SMS messages from TLDR Parents

TLDR Parents sends SMS messages to account holders who have explicitly opted in through a web form. This page documents the opt-in flow, the consent language users see, the messages they may receive, and how they can opt out.

Two kinds of messages

TLDR Parents sends two distinct types of SMS:

  1. Phone verification codes (one-time passwords). Sent in direct response to a user requesting one by clicking "Send code" on the phone verification screen. These are transactional and do not require recurring-message consent.
  2. Recurring account notifications. Sent only to users who have explicitly opted in by checking the SMS consent box. These include daily family event briefings, schedule changes detected from school and activity emails, new event notifications, and account alerts.

These are kept separate by design. A user can verify their phone number without enrolling in recurring messages.

The opt-in flow

Users opt in through the phone verification screen at app.tldrparents.com. The screen contains:

  • A phone number input field
  • A "Send code" button
  • An unchecked SMS consent checkbox

The consent checkbox displays the following label:

I agree to receive recurring automated text messages from TLDR Parents (daily family event briefings, schedule changes detected from school and activity emails, and account notifications). Message frequency varies. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to cancel.

Directly beneath the checkbox, the page displays:

Checking this box is optional. You can verify your phone and use TLDR Parents without enabling recurring text alerts.

Phone verification screen — the consent checkbox is unchecked by default. The "Send code" button becomes active when a valid phone number is entered, regardless of the checkbox state.

Optionality

The checkbox is unchecked by default on every visit. Phone verification (sending and entering the one-time code) works whether the box is checked or not. Consent to receive recurring text messages is not a condition of verifying a phone number or using TLDR Parents.

  • Box unchecked + Send code clicked → the user receives a one-time verification code and verifies their phone. No enrollment in recurring messages.
  • Box checked + Send code clicked → the user verifies their phone and is enrolled in recurring SMS notifications. The confirmation message below is sent.

Confirmation message

Users who opt in (check the box and complete phone verification) receive this SMS immediately:

TLDR Parents: You're subscribed to text notifications (daily briefings, schedule changes, account alerts). Msg frequency varies. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to cancel.

Message categories and frequency

Users who opt in may receive:

  • Daily family schedule briefings — once per day, typically in the morning, summarizing the family's upcoming events
  • Schedule change notifications — when a previously-detected event is rescheduled, cancelled, or updated based on an incoming school or activity email
  • New event notifications — when a new event is added to the family calendar from a school or activity email
  • Account notifications — password changes, security alerts, billing notifications, and changes to account settings

Message frequency varies based on the user's family schedule and account activity. No marketing or promotional messages are sent through this program.

Opting out

Users can opt out at any time by:

  • Replying STOP, CANCEL, END, QUIT, UNSUBSCRIBE, REVOKE, STOPALL, or OPTOUT to any SMS from TLDR Parents
  • Unchecking the SMS consent checkbox the next time they access their account and saving

After opting out, users receive a confirmation:

You have successfully been unsubscribed. You will not receive any more messages from this number. Reply START to resubscribe.
